Rider Readiness & Course Expectations

Before starting this course, it is essential that all riders already have a basic level of motorcycle control and road awareness.

It is the rider’s responsibility to be able to operate a motorcycle safely and confidently in everyday riding conditions. This includes, for example:

  • Approaching junctions under full control
  • Braking smoothly and predictably
  • Selecting the appropriate gear for your speed
  • Assessing and identifying safe opportunities to merge into traffic
  • Carrying out smooth, controlled gear changes
  • Demonstrating a basic understanding of the Highway Code

This course is designed for riders who can already ride a motorcycle at a basic level and are ready to develop the advanced skills required to pass Module 1 and Module 2 tests.

For most riders, this level of competence is achieved by practising regularly on a 125cc motorcycle on L-plates, building confidence, control, and roadcraft before progressing to full licence training.

Please note: if a rider attends without demonstrating a safe and basic level of motorcycle control, the instructor may determine that it is not safe or appropriate for them to continue on the course. In these circumstances, the rider may be asked to leave the training for safety reasons, and unfortunately no refund will be issued for any remaining course time.

This policy is in place to ensure the safety of all riders and maintain the high training standards expected throughout the course.

Licence Options

Once you have completed your CBT, you must pass both your motorcycle theory test and practical tests within 2 years. If this timeframe is exceeded, your CBT certificate will expire and need to be retaken.

There are several licence categories available, each allowing you to ride different types of motorcycles depending on your age and experience. While the test structure remains the same, the size and power of the motorcycle used will determine the category of licence you achieve.

AM

AM Licence

From Age 16

The AM licence allows you to ride mopeds up to 50cc.

To obtain this licence, you must complete:

  • A motorcycle theory test
  • Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests
Please note: if you complete your test on an automatic moped, your licence will be restricted to automatic vehicles only.

As with all categories, completing your test on an automatic motorcycle will restrict you to automatic machines only.

The A2 licence allows you to ride motorcycles up to 35kW, giving access to a much wider range of bikes.

To obtain this licence, you must complete:

  • A motorcycle theory test (unless you hold a full AM or A1 licence)
  • Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests
This is the most common route for riders progressing beyond 125cc.
